Fall Highway Cleanup - November 6th
Our local Capital Region Atheists and Agnostics Meetup Group is at it again, cleaning up our streets and getting out the news that non-theists are good citizens. On Sunday, November 6th, they invite you to help clean up their adopted highway (Rt. 9R, in Latham, NY).
Organizer Rick says:
Here's an opportunity for all the folks who were enthusiastic when we first contemplated this project, but whose busy summer schedules prevented participation in the initial clean-ups.
With the heavy lifting done, this will be the first of our twice yearly maintenance pick-ups. With a big turn out, a split crew and cars spotted at both ends and the middle of the route, we should be able to knock this off in an hour and a half. The drill we've evolved starts with breakfast at the diner. If you'd like to pass on breakfast, meet us at 9:00 AM at the CVS at the corner of Baker and Columbia...the management asks that you park on the Columbia Street side by the loading dock. Here we'll do the DOT-required sign-in and newbies' liability waivers. I will bring hard hats, reflective vests, gloves and coolers of water and other non-alcoholic refreshments. All of the helmets, helmet inserts and vests used in the last clean-up have been washed, so all are assured of clean safety gear. The gloves haven't been washed, but I figure that's why God created Purell, which I'll also bring. Remember to wear sturdy shoes like a work or hiking shoe if you have them. Sneakers should be avoided if possible. Bad weather will postpone this event so check your email as the date approaches.
We all applaud any people who channel the energy and resources of their affiliations into works of civic betterment. That said, it sure is nice to demonstrate that believers don't have a copyright on this sentiment and that religious morality isn't needed to impel community service. Come join us and you'll feel good about yourself and your non-believer identity.
