Here is a little history. I hate birthdays. Mine, other peoples, whatever.

Either I am buying things for other people that they don't want or need, or they are getting the same type of stuff for me. I have too much stuff as it is, and in todays society, if we want something we go and get it. Who waits for their birthday anymore? Nobody I know. So last September I gave away my birthday. I told all my friends and family to make a comparable donation to a charity I picked, instead of a gift. It worked great! I didn't need to pretend I liked the shirts my rents or in-laws got me, and Puppies Behind Bars (yes, it's a real charity) got a few hundred dollars and some exposure to my immediate circle as well as my Facebook community.
I have found, via a few google searches, a few other people doing the same thing but I would like this to be HUGE.
I want to start a revolution.

This could put a new spin on philanthropy. It combines charity, social networking, and just a pinch of peer pressure. After all, how can you ask for gifts from your friend who asks for nothing? You could even do a donation of time and effort, instead of a birthday dinner, how about a day of volunteering?
I can't help but wonder what would happen if just 20% of americans agreed to give up their birthdays, christmases, anniversaries, whatever...

Anyway, so far all I have is an idea. I have no capital, no web skills, no influential contacts and no idea how to push this idea forward. So I am simply putting the concept out there as much as I can, and whatever happens happens. So if anyone knows how to kickstart a social movement, I would love to hear it!

I think that's a great idea!

I think that's a great idea! I can't tell you how to start a nationwide movement, as I've never done so myself, but I suspect you should start small and local, and only once it catches on try to expand.

Certainly this forum is a good place to start the discussion with anyone who's interested, and if you like, you can request a personal blog on the site that you could use for wider publicity...
